Dr Dre - fifth top-earning

Dr Dre

According to Forbes' first list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings, Dr Dre was the fifth hip-hop personality top earner with $20 million, closely beaten by producer Timabaland with $21 million.

The list clearly showed a winner with Jay-z earning a cool $34 million. The list which only takes into consideration 2006 figures, does not include Jay-z's sale of Rocawear fashion label for $204 million.

Expect Dre to be soon climbing those ranks when he drops the long awaited detox!

while the new OS featured on just 0." said Ryan Reith, com, A link in the e-mail led to the site, you'll know that I haven't been having a very good experience with BT To cut a long story short almost a month ago BT disconnected my phone line and broadband then cancelled my account This was done because the man buying my house simply asked BT to do it even though he wasn't moving in for a couple of weeksAs amazing as it still is to me that BT happily disconnected me without receiving any form of authorisation or confirmation from myself I'm even more amazed that I still don't have a broadband connection This is despite having multiple high-level customer service teams working on resolving this for me Today I'm still surviving on a Three MiFi and chewing through a worryingly expensive amount of dataAlthough my original phone number was saved and transferred to my new home the phone line there wasn't working This was repaired on the 14th meaning that it should have been a relatively simple procedure to activate my broadband at the exchange But it would appear that absolutely nothing is simple when it comes to BTFor over a week I was told that my broadband would activate "tomorrow" before midnight But after two or three "tomorrows" have come and gone with the status remaining disappointingly quo you start to lose faith in such promises if ever you had faith in the first placeOn Monday I was contacted by a new BT department - Executive Level Technical Complaints - and told that there was a fault on my line that needed to be investigated I found this odd since the engineer who visited my property on the 14th said that the line was in perfect working order When I raised this query I was told that the original engineer was only testing the line for voice and not for broadband and that a line could happily carry voice signals but still carry a fault that stopped broadband functioning I was then treated to an explanation of how ADSL worksFunnily enough I already knew how ADSL worked and I'm well aware that a copper line can be good enough for voice but not for a DSL signal What I don't understand however is why an engineer who tested my line and told me that it was working perfectly and was "ready for broadband activation" would only have been testing for voice functionalityOf course my questions were somewhat moot since my new Executive Level Technical Complaints buddy was telling me that a new engineer would have to come round and test the line again in an effort to find the fault Unfortunately given that I was only told this on Monday evening I wasn't able to arrange for someone to be at home until today leaving me without broadband for another two daysSo today my wife has sat at home all morning waiting for a BT OpenReach engineer to arrive - you know what's coming don't you Yep that's right no engineer turned upUpon contacting the Executive Level Technical Complaints department my wife was informed that no engineer had been booked for today - there was no record that a booking had even been requested And of course there's no way to get an engineer out there today nowBut why didn't I confirm that the engineer was coming this morning I hear you ask The simple answer is - I didI emailed my contact at the Executive Level Technical Complaints department and asked when the engineer would arrive and he responded thus."I've tried contacting openreach but they haven't been able to contact the engineer" Followed by "The engineer should be there within the next hour and a half I'd say"Given that it has now been confirmed to me that no engineer had ever been booked I find it strange that my contact in the Executive Level Technical Complaints department was told by OpenReach that they couldn't get through to the engineer in question since apparently there was no engineer in questionAt this point I have no idea when or even if I'll ever get my broadband back Or whether I'll ever receive the promised explanation of how this whole sorry affair was allowed to happen I do know however that BT's levels of customer service and competency are woefully inadequate and need immediate attention But is it worth the 130 extra pounds? 512MB RAM, 200 ISO.3sec, Huddle hands small businesses many of the tools they'll need to get organised.

STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: October 31, 2007NASA managers today told the Discovery astronauts to forego a planned Thursday spacewalk to inspect a contaminated solar array rotary joint and instead to focus on a spacewalk Friday to attempt repairs of a torn and mangled space station solar array blanket. Confirming earlier unofficial accounts of morning discussions to assess repair scenarios, astronaut Tony Antonelli passed the news up to shuttle commander Pam Melroy a few minutes before a spacewalk planning conference."For the EVA conference, thought you might be wanting to listen in to at least part of that," he said. "We're going to change the plan for the next couple of days. EVA-4 will not be executed on flight day 10 (Thursday). We're going to shoot for flight day 11 (Friday) ... the contents of which will be solar array wing stuff."You'll hear more about that in the conference," he said. "We'll leave flight day 11 as a placeholder for now and if we don't get ready, then we'll try flight day 12 (Saturday). If you've got any questions on the big picture stuff, just let me know.""OK, Houston, thank you," Melroy replied from inside the Destiny laboratory module. Peggy (station commander Peggy Whitson) and I copy all. We understand we are not going EVA tomorrow and we will talk more about it in the EVA conference, which I will be attending."Despite the serious nature of the work, outgoing station astronaut Clay Anderson reminded viewers on Earth that Halloween is not limited to Earth's surface, wearing a long black cape as he floated about the station.Astronauts Scott Parazynski and Doug Wheelock had planned to stage a spacewalk Thursday, the fourth of Discovery's mission, to inspect a contaminated solar alpha rotary joint on the right side of the main power truss that currently is locked in place. It normally turns outboard solar arrays to track the sun, but the source of contamination discovered during a spacewalk Sunday must be determined, and possibly corrected, before it can resume normal operation.Changing the content of the spacewalk indicates the high priority NASA is placing on repairing the ripped solar array blanket on the P6-4B array on the left side of the station's power truss. In its current partially deployed state, the array does not have the structural rigidity for normal sun-tracking rotation.Delaying the initial repair attempt until Friday at the earliest will give engineers more time to come up with workable solutions. But it also means delaying a planned spacewalk Saturday by Whitson and station flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko to prepare the newly installed Harmony module for its move to the front of the station after Discovery undocks. With a solar array repair spacewalk on tap Friday or, if preparations take more time, Saturday, Whitson's spacewalk will be delayed until after the shuttle's departure, adding one more major task to the station crew's plate as they prepare for delivery of a European laboratory module in December.Whitson and crewmate Dan Tani already planned two spacewalks to connect Harmony to the station's power and cooling systems after first attaching a shuttle docking port and using the station's robot arm to move the assembly to the front of the Destiny module, work that can only be done after Discovery departs.See our from earlier this morning for additional details and background.Additional coverage for subscribers:VIDEO:THE FLIGHT DAY 8 HIGHLIGHTS MOVIE VIDEO:TUESDAY'S MISSION STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: August 27, 2006NASA managers plan to meet tonight to make a decision on whether to proceed with an attempt to launch the shuttle Atlantis Tuesday on a space station assembly mission or roll the spacecraft back to the protection of the Vehicle Assembly Building because of hurricane Ernesto. As it now stands, Atlantis has at least a shot at getting off the ground Tuesday at 3:42 p.m. if engineers can resolve lingering questions about the possible effects of a Friday lightning strike on critical booster and self-destruct systems. The forecast for Tuesday calls for showers in the area and if NASA failed to get Atlantis off, engineers would not have time to get the shuttle back to the VAB before high winds from Ernesto reached the area. As of this writing, 40-knot winds are expected at the Kennedy Space Center by Thursday afternoon. That's important because NASA safety rules forbid moving a shuttle from the launch pad if sustained winds of 40 knots or greater are expected. At the launch pad, a shuttle is protected somewhat by rain barriers and a lightning protection system. While NASA specifications say a shuttle can endure near hurricane-strength winds at the pad, the ship's external tank is exposed to the elements, as are the spacecraft's twin solid-fuel boosters.NASA has moved shuttles off the launch pad 15 times in program history, four of them due to threatening tropical storms or hurricanes.Computer models predicting the path and forward velocity of Ernesto are "drifting a little more to the right (east) now, a little more up central Florida," said Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA's senior spaceflight manager. "So that's a concern to us from a rollback standpoint. We'd like to have the vehicle back to the (Vehicle) Assembly Building before high winds hit the Cape. So that forces us to start taking some actions pretty soon."We really have two competing objectives," he said. "One, we want to get the vehicle ready to go fly. The other objective is we want to get the vehicle ready to roll back to the VAB. And they are not compatible. Those are two totally different objectives. And at some point in the sequence you have to give up on either one or the other. That point in time hasn't occurred yet, but it's coming this evening and we're going to have to make a decision."If the decision is to move Atlantis back to the VAB, engineers would first have to drain on-board oxygen and hydrogen supplies, a hazardous operation that requires workers to leave the launch pad, and then make critical disconnections. The entire process, from the time the decision was made to Atlantis reaching the VAB, would take about 42 hours, officials said, putting Atlantis back in the VAB by Tuesday evening."Probably by about midnight tonight we have to decide one way or the other which way we're going and we can no longer continue to protect both options," Gerstenmaier said. "So we will protect both options as long as we can unless the data changes. If the data changes, we'll delay the decision as long as the data allows us to delay the decision."But based on Ernesto's current track and the convergence of several computer models, it would appear NASA will not be able to delay a decision much longer. The goal of Atlantis' mission is to deliver a new set of solar arrays to the international space station. To reach the station, the shuttle must launch into the plane of its orbit during periods when the angle between that plane and the sun doesn't result in lower-than-allowable temperatures. Such temperature problems occur when the so-called beta angle drops below 50 to 60 degrees. In this case, the launch window also is affected by a self-imposed NASA requirement to launch in daylight for photo documentation of the shuttle's heat shield and external tank. Based on all three constraints, Atlantis' launch window extends through Sept. 13.The Russians plan to launch a fresh crew to the space station in mid September and to bring the lab's current crew home 11 days later. The Russians do not want to launch past Sept. 18 at the latest to avoid a dead-of-night landing for the returning station crew. That means Atlantis must launch by Sept. 7 to complete its docked mission and depart before arrival of the Soyuz.Gerstenmaier said today a preliminary assessment shows Atlantis could be rolled back to the VAB and back out to the pad after Ernesto passes in time to support a launch try by Sept. 7 or 8. But engineers say a more realistic estimate is eight to 10 days between rollout and launch. If Atlantis misses the September window, NASA would be faced with the prospect of just three lighted launch days between then and the end of the year - Oct. 26-27 and Dec. 23. The next lighted launch window after that opens Feb. 19, and that assumes NASA would launch with a beta angle of less than 50 to 60 degrees.Asked if NASA might be willing to relax the daylight launch constraint to open up more opportunities, Gerstenmaier said "we really want to keep the daylight launch" to ensure photo documentation of the shuttle's external tank, especially so-called ice-frost ramps that are still considered potentially dangerous."We really want to see how the ice-frost ramps perform, we really want to gather this data," he said. "So I think it's a pretty strong requirement. We may kind of nibble around the edges, do we need umbilical camera lighting? Do we need lighting during ascent? Are there other things we can do that might allow us to shave a little bit one way or the other? But I think from where we are really in this flight test mode, this data's pretty important to us and it's going to carry a pretty high priority."Additional coverage for subscribers:VIDEO:OFFICIALS EXPLAIN INITIAL SCRUB VIDEO:SEE THE LIGHTNING STRIKE AT PAD B VIDEO:ANOTHER VIEW OF LIGHTNING STRIKE VIDEO:PRE-LAUNCH NEWS CONFERENCE VIDEO:FRIDAY'S COUNTDOWN STATUS VIDEO:CREW ARRIVES FOR LAUNCH VIDEO:THURSDAY'S COUNTDOWN STATUS VIDEO:LAUNCH DATE ANNOUNCEMENT NEWS CONFERENCE VIDEO:COMPLETE PREVIEW OF ATLANTIS MISSION VIDEO:DETAILS OF THE THREE SPACEWALKS VIDEO:MEET THE SIX ASTRONAUTS VIDEO:CREW LAUNCH PAD PRESS CHAT VIDEO:ATLANTIS ARRIVES AT LAUNCH PAD 39B VIDEO:ROLLOUT FROM VEHICLE ASSEMBLY BUILDING BEGINS VIDEO:TRUSS IN PAD'S PAYLOAD ROOM VIDEO:PAYLOAD HOISTED INTO THE PAD VIDEO:STATION TRUSS PAYLOAD DELIVERED TO PAD MORE: STS-115 patchThe official crew patch for the STS-115 mission of space shuttle Atlantis to resume orbital construction of the International Space Station.Choose your store: - - - Telescopes.comLargest selection and the best prices anywhere in the world. STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: November 20, 2007Floating in the Quest airlock module, space station commander Peggy Whitson and Dan Tani switched their spacesuits to internal battery power at 5:10 a.m. today to kick off a planned six-hour 40-minute spacewalk to route power and cooling to the new Harmony module. A second excursion will be needed Saturday to finish the job and help clear the way for launch of shuttle Atlantis Dec. 6 on a long-awaited mission to deliver a European laboratory module."A nice day at the office here," Tani said as he floated out of the airlock high above the north Atlantic Ocean. "Oh, it's just an awesome view!"This is the 98th spacewalk devoted to station assembly and maintenance since construction began in 1998, the 21st so far this year and the second for the Expedition 16 crew. Whitson and flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko carried out the crew's first EVA on Nov. 9, preparing the station's shuttle docking port for attachment to Harmony. With that work complete, the docking port was robotically removed from the front of the Destiny lab module on Nov. 12 and bolted to Harmony, which was initially mounted on the left-side of the central Unity module. The assembled Harmony/docking port "stack" then was moved to its permanent home on the front end of Destiny two days later. The goal of today's spacewalk by Whitson and Tani is to make a variety of electrical connections between Harmony and Destiny to route solar array power to the new module. They also will unstow and mount ammonia cooling lines that will run in a long tray from the complex's main power truss, across the Destiny module to the interface with Harmony.A second spacewalk Saturday will mirror today's work, giving Harmony the power and cooling necessary to support European and Japanese research modules that will be attached to the module's forward ports."We think we've got a good plan together, the teams on the ground have really helped us out and we feel ready," Whitson, the station's first female commander, said Monday."Peggy's always cool. I'm just trying to do the collected part," Tani joked. "We are excited and these EVAs I expect to be tough. When we practice them in the water, I always come out thinking, boy those are really some pretty challenging tasks that we're being asked to do. So we're looking forward to it."Plus, we know that we are in the critical path to getting the node (Harmony) fully activated so the next shuttle can launch. So there's a little bit of pressure there, but we like the pressure and we're really looking forward to getting outside and getting the work done."After leaving the station's airlock, the spacewalkers will meet on the lower side of the central S0 segment of the solar power truss to remove an ammonia shunt jumper from coolant loop A, permitting attachment of the loop A cooling line tray later in the EVA.After reconfiguring electrical connectors in the P1 solar array truss segment and removing caps from ammonia lines leading into Harmony, Whitson and Tani will unstow the hinged 18.5-foot-long 300-pound loop A tray from its storage location on the central solar array truss. The loop A tray will be mounted on top of the starboard avionics tray on the right side of the Destiny module. With the tray in place, the spacewalkers will make six ammonia fluid line connections to complete the loop A supply and return lines: Two connections between the S0 truss and the tray; two at a hinge in the tray; and two more between the end of the tray and Harmony. With coolant loop A in place, Whitson and Tani plan to turn their attention to making electrical connections. Tani will connect 11 cables on the other side of the lab module and Whitson will connect four cables between the shuttle docking port and Harmony.Saturday's spacewalk is virtually identical, with work to connect the loop B cooling lines, make additional electrical connections and to prepare Harmony's right-side port for the upcoming attachment of Columbus."Once we get through these EVAs, we still have some logistics-type tasks, nothing I would consider very sexy or noteworthy, but still things we need to get done between now and 1E (the Columbus flight)," said Kenny Todd, space station integration and operations manager."We've been on a tight schedule trying to get to this launch Dec. 6, so we are reviewing daily our tasking to ensure we're only doing those things we need to do to be able to support this flight in early December. We're all very, very excited about getting the Columbus module on orbit."The first of the Expedition 16 crew's three spacewalks had been scheduled to be carried out during the shuttle Discovery's recent visit. But unplanned work to fix a mangled solar array forced mission planners to defer the station crew's spacewalk to Nov. 9, after the shuttle's departure.Whitson, Tani and Malenchenko have been working pretty much non stop to get Harmony moved, hooked up and prepared for Columbus in time to permit the Atlantis flight during a short eight-day launch window that opens Dec. 6."They are not going to have Thanksgiving off," said station flight director Holly Ridings. "The crew knew that this month of November was going to be very, very challenging. And so they said right up front, if it works out that we need to work on Thanksgiving, we are more than happy to do that. And it did work out that way. So they will be working on Thanksgiving with a lot of us here working as well to support them."That doesn't mean they won't take time off for a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal in space. During a TV downlink Monday, Whitson and Tani took time to beam down a holiday greeting."We wanted to say happy Thanksgiving to all our NASA (television) viewers," Whitson said. "We feel particularly privileged and thankful to be up here on board the international space station this Thanksgiving and we're looking forward to our activities this week - we have a busy week with EVAs - and we hope that you also are having a great Thanksgiving."Said Tani: "My family, we gather for Thanksgiving and we spend a minute just thinking about the things we're thankful for and of course, I'm thankful for the continued health of my family and my loved ones. Also this year, I'm thankful that I'm safely on the space station, conducting our mission successfully and having a great time doing it. I'm thankful for all the people on the ground who support us and who are tireless in their devotion to the space station program, to the space program in general and to the crew. And I'm thankful for Peggy, my crewmate ... and Yuri."When we think about Thanksgiving, we think about the Pilgrims coming to the New World and expanding their knowledge of their universe, making new discoveries and making a better life for themselves. And Thanksgiving was an opportunity to be thankful for their survival of a very difficult time. And I think maybe where we are in the space program, of human space adventures, and thinking that well, here we are safely on the space station, we have setbacks but we solve them and hopefully this is the start of our generation, or our world, expanding our knowledge and learning how to live in space and expand our knowledge outside of low-Earth orbit."Whitson then took the microphone and said, "So we would like to wish everyone on Earth a happy Thanksgiving, and especially our NASA family. We're thankful to be part of that family."The two astronauts then showed off some of the food they enjoy in space, including Thanksgiving Day fare, including freeze-dried shrimp cocktail - "it's a favorite of almost everybody on board the station" - and Russian canned lamb and vegetables.Along with sliced oranges, Tani showed off a package of Italian ham sent up by his family and miniature, bite-size loaves of Russian bread that "are delicious complements to our food.""Finally, we don't go anywhere in the universe without chocolate," Tani said as Whitson let M&M candies float free. "These are the popular candy-coated chocolates and they're popular because of the color and the fun. I think they say they melt in the mouth and not on the lab."Holding up an empty bottle of hot sauce, Whitson said: "Our motto on board the station is, it's all about the sauce. The best part of eating here is you have to have the right sauce to put on it and typically, the hotter the sauce, the better. This one obviously is our favorite!"So happy Thanksgiving to all of you on the ground, we're thrilled to be here and have the opportunity to continue our assembly and we wish all the best for our friends and family and the NASA family as well. Thanks so much." Animation of the crew-capable Dragon Version 2. Credit: SpaceXSpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk debuted the space capsule from the company's headquarters here before a crowd of employees, VIPs and media. The white gumdrop-shaped space capsule, dubbed Dragon Version 2, is about halfway through development in a public-private cost-sharing arrangement between SpaceX and NASA, Musk said. The current iteration of the Dragon capsule has flown five times, all successfully, including three operational cargo deliveries to the space station under a $1.6 billion commercial resupply contract with NASA."Going from Dragon Version 1, we wanted to take a big step in technology," Musk said. "Some important characteristics of that is the ability to land anywhere on land propulsively. You'll be able to land anywhere on Earth with the accuracy of a helicopter, which is something I think a modern spaceship should be able to do."The spaceship can host up to seven astronauts for several days on its own after launching on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. It can withstand a half-year in orbit when docked to the International Space Station. The capsule showcased Thursday featured touchscreen displays and seven leather seats emblazoned with a SpaceX logo. Musk described the interior during a webcast of the announcement."We've aimed for something with Dragon Version 2 for the interfaces and the overall aesthetic of something that's very clean -- very simple. As the pilot, you're able to interact with the screens overhead and control the spacecraft, and then we've got all the critical functions that are needed in an emergency situation as manual buttons."Speaking with reporters after the event, Musk said the touchscreen technology was borrowed brom Tesla, his electric car company. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk presents Dragon Version 2 at the company's headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif. Credit: Gene Blevins/LA Daily News"The biggest difference [between the two Dragon versions] is the SuperDracos," said Garrett Reisman, a former NASA astronaut and manager of SpaceX's commercial crew transportation program. "We can do launch abort and also return to land. There's a lot of other more subtle differences, but that's the big one."The crew-capable Dragon will still feature a trunk section to carry unpressurized cargo, but the extendable power-producing solar panels on the resupply version of the capsule are replaced by fixed panels attached to the craft's body. It is also designed to be reused up to 10 times without major refurbishment.Reisman said SpaceX is aiming to launch crews on Dragon spacecraft and complete an autopilot docking with the International Space Station on the same day."Another [difference] is this one gets to the space station all by itself. You don't have to grab it with the space station's robot arm."After training on the venerable Russian Soyuz spacecraft before a three-month expedition on the space station, Reisman said SpaceX's Dragon offers a roomier ride for astronauts."There's so much more elbow room in there compared to the Soyuz," he said. "Instead of just bringing two of your buddies, you can bring six ... It's got modern electronics, it's got modern materials in the heat shield. So technologically, it's a giant leap beyond the Soyuz." NASA is in the middle of a months-long process to select one or two companies to finish developing privately-owned, government-funded spacecraft to ferry astronauts to and from the space station. Officials say NASA plans to announce its decision in August or September.SpaceX, Boeing Co., and Sierra Nevada Corp. currently receive funding from NASA. Boeing and SpaceX won agreements in August 2012 worth $460 million and $440 million, respectively, to work on their CST-100 and Dragon capsules. Sierra Nevada was selected at the same time to continue development of the Dream Chaser lifting body spacecraft at a slower pace, receiving an award worth up to $212.5 million.NASA pays the companies upon the completion of certain milestones, such as tests and design reviews.NASA to date has committed $525 million to SpaceX, pending payments at the completion of several more milestones later this year. Once Boeing finishes work under its agreement with NASA, the aerospace giant will have received $580 million. Payments to Sierra Nevada will total $323 million at the end its agreement later this year. A look inside the seven-seat Dragon spacecraft. Credit: Gene Blevins/LA Daily NewsMusk said development of the upgraded human-rated version of Dragon will cost between $800 million and $1 billion. About half of they money has already been spent."For the spacecraft itself, it's going to be something on the order of 70 to 90 percent NASA-funded," Musk said. "The rocket is not NASA-funded at all."NASA faces a decision late this summer whether to pour its money into one spacecraft team, or spread its funding among two companies to maintain competition, which officials say would keep costs down."If we don't win the NASA contract, we'll do our best to continue the development and still make it happen," Musk said Thursday. The House of Representatives committee charged with NASA oversight wants to force NASA to pick one company, saying it will ensure U.S. crew flights begin as soon as possible, ending NASA's reliance on Russian Soyuz vehicles to transport astronauts to the space station.According to Musk, the Dragon Version 2 could be ready for an unmanned orbital test flight by the end of 2015. A piloted demonstration mission to the space station would follow in 2016 before NASA gives its blessing for operational crews to climb aboard the capsule."From a SpaceX standpoint, we actually expect to be ready to transport crew in 2016, about a year sooner than NASA needs it," Musk said. "NASA wants to be a little cautious in the timing of things, so they don't want to count on us being there in 2016, but we feel fairly confident that the vehicle will be ready in two years."NASA officials say a commercial crew spacecraft can be operational by the end of 2017 under the program's current budget.Musk unveiled the new version of Dragon in a presentation at the company's headquarters, highlighting the capsule's futuristic appearance and innovative technologies in a pep rally-like atmosphere.A curtain dropped to reveal the capsule on SpaceX's factory floor as a fog machine and multi-colored lights cast a dramatic glow on the spacecraft.Musk described the capsule as "flight hardware" in response to questions from reporters but officials did not say if or when any of the vehicle presented Thursday would fly. Artist's concept of a Dragon spacecraft with crew approaching the International Space Station. Credit: SpaceXEight SuperDraco rocket engines mounted around the circumference of the spacecraft will slow down the capsule during descent, guiding it to a gentle touchdown on a landing pad. The cargo version of the Dragon spacecraft parachutes into the Pacific Ocean."The biggest technology change for Dragon Version 2 was the SuperDraco engine," Musk said. "That has to produce a tremendous amount of thrust and yet be very light. It's also got to throttle over a wide range, so it's got to be able to go from a very low throttle range to a very high throttle range and react very quickly. It was quite a tricky thing to develop."SpaceX announced Tuesday it has finished qualification testing of the SuperDraco engine ahead of a planned pad abort test of the Dragon spacecraft later this year. The SuperDraco thrusters also function as a launch abort system, capable of whisking an astronaut crew to safety if a rocket exploded after liftoff. Each SuperDraco engine can generate up to 16,000 pounds of thrust, but their power can be adjusted during descent to control the capsule's trajectory and velocity. Musk said the engine's thrust chamber is made by 3D printers in what SpaceX claims is an unprecedented use of the simplified, low-cost manufacturing technology in spaceflight."If you can 3D print something with sufficiently good material properties, then that's the easiest way to do it, certainly in a rocket company," Musk said. "In the case of the SuperDraco engine, we didn't in the very beginning anticipate being able to 3D print it," Musk said. "We tried all sorts of normal methods of developing the engine, and to be honest, those did not have great success. We said, let's give 3D printing a try and see if it works. Initially, we thought of it as sort of a Hail Mary, and it actually turned out to work super well."Musk said the human-rated Dragon will still carry parachutes in case of a propulsion system failure during re-entry.Follow Stephen Clark on Twitter: .Final Shuttle Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The crew emblem for the final space shuttle mission is now available in our store. This artist's concept illustrates a Falcon 1 rocket. Credit: SpaceXThe South African amassed a fortune as co-founder of PayPal, the online payment system, and earlier the Zip2 software company. He's spending his cash to bring the Falcon rockets to the launch pad."The past few decades have been a dark age for development of a new human space transportation system. One multi-billion dollar government program after another has failed. In fact, they have failed even to reach the launch pad, let alone get to space," Musk said in testimony before a U.S. Senate committee last spring."The reaction of the public has been to care less and less about space, an apathy not intrinsic to a nation of explorers, but born of poor progress, of being disappointed time and again. When America landed on the Moon, I believe we made a promise and gave people a dream. It seemed then that, given the normal course of technological evolution, someone who was not a billionaire, not an astronaut made of 'The Right Stuff,' but just a normal person, might one day see Earth from space. That dream is nothing but broken disappointment today. If we do not now take action different from the past, it will remain that way."SpaceX has been selling its small Falcon 1 rocket for $5.9 million and the beefed up Falcon 5 for $15.8 million, plus launch site Range fees, which is significantly cheaper than other American rockets available today with comparable lifting capacity."In fact, it was precisely to improve the cost and reliability of access to space, initially for satellites and later for humans, that I established SpaceX (although some of my friends still think the real goal was to turn a large fortune into a small one)," Musk said in his Senate testimony."Our first offering, called Falcon 1, will be the world's only semi-reusable orbital rocket apart from the space shuttle. Although Falcon 1 is a light class launch vehicle, we have already announced and sold the first flight of Falcon 5, our medium class rocket."Long term plans call for development of a heavy lift product and even a super-heavy, if there is customer demand. We expect that each size increase would result in a meaningful decrease in cost per pound to orbit. For example, dollar cost per pound to orbit dropped from $4,000 to $1,300 between Falcon 1 and Falcon 5. Ultimately, I believe $500 per pound or less is very achievable." The first Falcon rocket is lifted upright on its Vandenberg launch pad. Photo: SpaceXThe relatively small coterie of engineers working for SpaceX, based in El Segundo, California, has developed the Falcon 1 vehicle and its two engine systems. Both stages of the rocket will consume a highly refined kerosene propellant and super-cold liquid oxygen. The first stage main engine, called Merlin, generates about 71,500 pounds of thrust at sea-level to boost the 70-foot tall, 5.5-foot diameter rocket off the ground. The motor fires for nearly three minutes before separating and parachuting into the ocean where an awaiting ship recovers the stage for reuse, a feature designed to hold down per-launch costs for Falcon's government and commercial customers. The upper stage's Kestrel engine, with its 7,500 pounds of thrust in vacuum, is capable of several re-ignitions during ascent. The Falcon booster stands vertical on its pad. Photo: SpaceXFalcon 1's lifting capacity puts the vehicle in a match-up with Orbital Sciences' rockets. Falcon 1 is designed to carry 950 pounds of payload into polar orbits, 1,280 pounds into the International Space Station's orbit and 1,480 pounds into a low-Earth orbit due east of Cape Canaveral. To substantially increase the amount of cargo SpaceX can launch, the company is developing the Falcon 5 that resembles a big brother of Falcon 1.Standing 100 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter, the Falcon 5 is a gradual evolution from the Falcon 1 design. But what distinguishes the booster is the cluster of five Merlin first stage engines. The powerplants will be feeding from the same kerosene and liquid oxygen tanks, which SpaceX says provides an "engine-out" capability. That means the first stage could suffer an engine failure -- and depending on when during ascent, as many of three lost engines -- and still complete the launch. Kevlar shielding wrapped around each engine is supposed to protect the good engines from one that is malfunctioning."In the case of SpaceX, we believe that our second generation vehicle in particular, the Falcon 5, will provide a factor of ten improvement in propulsion reliability. Falcon 5 will be the first U.S. launch vehicle since the Saturn 5 moon rocket that can complete its mission even if an engine fails in flight - like almost all commercial aircraft. In fact, Saturn 5, which had a flawless flight record, was able to complete its mission on two occasions only because it had engine-out redundancy," Musk told the Presidential Commission on the Moon-Mars Initiative last year. The Falcon rockets are built at the SpaceX factory in California. Photo: SpaceXOn the drawing board is the Merlin 2 engine that'll rev up to 100,000 pounds of thrust. But the initial version of Falcon 5 relies on the original Merlin of the Falcon 1 design. With the upgraded engine cluster producing a half-million pounds of thrust at launch, Falcon 5 will loft 10,530 pounds into polar orbit, 12,010 pounds to the station's altitude and 13,260 pounds to the low-Earth orbit from the Cape inclined 28 degrees north and south of the equator. What's more, the bigger booster will be capable of carrying 4,240 pounds into a geosynchronous transfer orbit, inclined 9 degrees, that is used by communications satellites destined for geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above the planet, and it can accelerate 2,650 pounds to escape velocity for planetary and deep space probes. The Falcon 5 upper stage will use another kerosene-fueled Merlin engine, a departure from earlier plans to fly two Kestrel engines on the rocket.Falcon missions begin with rocket construction in El Segundo. The completed rockets are strapped onto a special trailer and driven to the launch site. The payload is mated to the vehicle in the final days before liftoff while the rocket is still resting on the mobile transporter. As the countdown begins, the fully assembled booster is erected on the pad, fueled and readied for liftoff. The SpaceX design requires little infrastructure, with a large, portable tent covering the horizontal rocket at the launch site. The first Falcon rocket will be launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., in March. Photo: SpaceXThree Falcon 1 rockets have been sold for launches this year. The first carries a U.S. military communications satellite from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base in March. That will be followed with another Defense Department mission from a Marshall Islands launch site being built in the Pacific. The later mission, also from the Marshall Islands, will loft a spacecraft for Malaysia. The first Falcon 5 on the manifest goes from Vandenberg in the second quarter of 2006 with a one-third scale test craft for Bigelow Aerospace's Earth-orbiting inflatable ."I think something has to be done about the cost of long-term access to space. My long term interest is actually in human transportation but I think it makes sense from sound business standpoint to start off with something small and where there is a clear market, which is satellite delivery, and down the road scale up the vehicle," Musk said in an earlier interview with Spaceflight Now.Musk acknowledged that developing the Falcon rocket from scratch has been difficult."I like challenging engineering problems and this is certainly quite challenging...Financially speaking, I'm a volunteer in this situation. I made enough money with PayPal and Zip2 that I don't really need to work. I guess it would have to be more interesting than living on a tropical island or something like that."For more on SpaceX and its plans at Cape Canaveral, see our separate .Ares 1-X PatchThe official embroidered patch for the Ares 1-X rocket test flight, is available for purchase.Apollo CollageThis beautiful one piece set features the Apollo program emblem surrounded by the individual mission logos.Expedition 21The official embroidered patch for the International Space Station Expedition 21 crew is now available from our stores.Hubble PatchThe official embroidered patch for mission STS-125, the space shuttle's last planned service call to the Hubble Space Telescope, is available for purchase. | | | | 2014 Spaceflight Now Inc.SpaceX to balance business realities, rocket innovation SPACEFLIGHT NOWPosted: June 6, 2014 Striving to be ready for an onslaught of launches under contract over the next few years, SpaceX plans to double the launcher production rate in its Southern California factory before the end of the year without compromising its commitments to develop a human-rated commercial spaceship, demonstrate rocket reusability, and further cut the cost of space transportation. A view of the Falcon 9 first stage's nine Merlin 1D engines. Credit: SpaceX"We need to meet our cadence of launch," said Gwynne Shotwell, president of SpaceX, at a discussion Wednesday at the Atlantic Council in Washington. "It's about one a month this year, and it's almost two a month next year."While SpaceX tries to manage a manifest packed with launches for NASA, commercial satellite operators, and perhaps soon the U.S. military, Shotwell said SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk is committed to keeping the company at the forefront of space transportation innovation."Elements in SpaceX clearly are focusing on operability and production," Shotwell said. "It's a transition that we're meeting the challenges of as we speak, but SpaceX will never be a company that is just operations and production focused. We'll always have a team of [research and development] engineers and technicians to ensure that we are constantly innovating. Elon's job is to make sure we are constantly innovating and pushing boundaries."In the next few years, SpaceX wants to develop a human-rated commercial spaceship and a reusable version of its Falcon 9 rocket. NASA is helping fund a crewed configuration of SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, a project Musk estimates will cost about $1 billion, and SpaceX is using private capital to develop and demonstrate the Falcon 9 rocket's reusability.SpaceX has not disclosed how much the reusable rocket program will cost."We are focused on production and operability for part of the company, and the other part is the innovation piece, and we will continue that forever," Shotwell said.SpaceX had planned 10 or more Falcon 9 rocket launches this year, but delays caused by both internal technical issues and external forces have conspired to keep the commercial launchers from meeting the company's manifest. After a quick start to the year with the successful launch of the Thaicom 6 telecommunications satellite Jan. 6, SpaceX had to wait until April 18 for its second mission of the year, which faced delays as engineers completed upgrades to the company's Dragon cargo resupply capsule for the International Space Station.Engineers also discovered contamination in the Dragon's cargo bay, and then an electrical fire knocked a U.S. Air Force tracking radar offline at Cape Canaveral, triggering more delays.Throw in the difficulties of scheduling a mission to the International Space Station -- a process likened to air traffic control at an airport amid the comings and goings of international crew and cargo ships -- and SpaceX's resupply flights can only launch when the space station is ready to receive them.A helium leak in the Falcon 9 rocket's first stage liquid oxygen pressurization system was the culprit for SpaceX's most recent delay. Engineers discovered the anomaly on the launch pad on the eve of a planned liftoff with six Orbcomm data relay satellites, triggering a month-long launch slip."We had a helium leak," Musk said. "Helium is a pernicious little molecule, I've got to say."The Orbcomm mission is set for liftoff June 12 from Cape Canaveral in a 54-minute launch window opening at 9:07 p.m. EDT (0107 GMT on June 13). A view inside the SpaceX rocket factory in Hawthorne, Calif. Credit: SpaceXTwo communications satellites owned by AsiaSat of Hong Kong are next in SpaceX's launch queue. AsiaSat officials have said the spacecraft are complete and being stored at their Space Systems/Loral manufacturing plant in Palo Alto, Calif. The satellite processing clean room inside SpaceX's launch pad hangar at Cape Canaveral can only accommodate one payload at a time, so the shipment of the AsiaSat 8 satellite -- the next payload on SpaceX's manifest for launch this summer -- is on hold until the Orbcomm mission is launched."We have to execute on our manifest," Shotwell said. "I think the most recent criticism of SpaceX is can't we fly the missions that we say we're going to fly. I think we'll prove that [we can] over the coming months."SpaceX will not consider a public stock offering before achieving a predictable launch rate, Shotwell said."We have had delays as any development program does, but now we're starting to see where we're going to be waiting on our customers, which frankly is a relief to me," Shotwell said. "We're going to have to be good about predicting when we'll launch and what we'll launch before we change our [capitalization] strategy."Speaking to reporters via a conference call in April, Musk identified one manufacturing glitch, saying a primary constraint driving SpaceX's schedule "all boils down to this one particular part -- an injector casting.""We think we've resolved that particular issue, which should unlock quite a high rate of increased production," Musk said.SpaceX has 42 missions on its manifest at a value of $4.2 billion, according to Shotwell, who claimed the company captured "100 percent" of commercial Falcon 9-class launch business in 2011 and 2012. Many of the missions contracted in 2011 and 2012 are on SpaceX's launch schedule over the next 12 months.Shotwell said SpaceX will not hesitate to add new capabilities, upgraded components or other systems to its Falcon 9 rockets, as long as their customers are comfortable with it.SpaceX officials have said they will not use a Falcon 9 rocket as a reusability testbed unless the customer gives permission. Engineers are now trying to guide a Falcon 9 first stage to a precision ocean splashdown a few hundred miles downrange from the launch site, then recover the rocket for inspections. Some time soon -- Musk says as soon as next year -- SpaceX could be ready to fly a Falcon 9 rocket with a first stage with a flight already in its logbook."I believe we have to get out of this mindset that the best rocket and the best technology is the one that has stayed the same for decades," Shotwell said. "In no other industry is that the case. You can imagine the chip industry, Intel and Qualcomm, if their chips remained the same year after year. It would be a disaster. I do want to push the concept of innovating to make better, and we'll have to work through processes to make that OK."Just to be clear, customers can fly the certified configuration if that's what they want. I think we'll demonstrate that we can innovate and spin our design successfully. We've done it successfully to date ... We need to get our customers comfortable with the design process." SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell. Credit: NASA/Jay WestcottBy the end of 2014, SpaceX will producing two rockets every month, Shotwell said. That is up from one per month at the current rate inside SpaceX's factory in Hawthorne, Calif."We're really screaming on production," Shotwell said. Each Falcon 9 rocket has 10 Merlin 1D engines, so building two rockets per month will demand SpaceX's engine shop produce at least 240 engines per year. The introduction of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket, made of three Falcon 9 first stage cores with nine engines each, will make the propulsion team churn out even more engines. Each Falcon Heavy rocket flies with 28 Merlin engines on the first stage, strap-on boosters and the upper stage. The assembly line could get a reprieve if SpaceX can demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of recovering and reusing the first stages of Falcon rockets."We anticipate probably 50 percent market capture as we build out the Falcon family of launch vehicles, if not more," Shotwell said.Follow Stephen Clark on Twitter: .STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134. NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell and Kennedy Space Center director Bob Cabana speak to reporters at launch pad 39A. Photo credit: NASA/Dan CasperThe agreement turns over control of Launch Complex 39A to the commercial space transportation firm, which plans to use the launch pad for the the initial flights of the Falcon Heavy, a mega-rocket featuring 27 first stage engines generating nearly 4 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.Pad 39A was the starting point for many historic Apollo and space shuttle missions, including the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 and the first and last shuttle launches in 1981 and 2011."We'll make great use of this pad, I promise," said Gwynne Shotwell, president of SpaceX, in remarks to the media moments after signing the lease. "We've had architects and our launch site engineering [team] working for many months on the sidelines. We will launch the Falcon Heavy from here first -- from this pad -- early next year."Shotwell said pad 39A would also host launches of astronauts aboard the crewed version of SpaceX's Dragon capsule, which is under development in a public-private partnership between the company and NASA.SpaceX is competing with Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp. to win another round of government funding to continue development of their human-rated spacecraft, culminating in crewed missions by 2017.Launch pad 39A becomes SpaceX's third launching base after an existing complex on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station a few miles to the south and a West Coast facility for flights into polar orbit at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets have flown eight times -- seven launches from Cape Canaveral and one flight from Vandenberg.Without going into detail, Shotwell said SpaceX would make some modifications to pad 39A but leave historic elements of the complex, which has sat mostly untouched since the space shuttle Atlantis rocketed into orbit on July 8, 2011, to begin its last mission. The turnover of pad 39A marks another milestone in the space center's transformation following the retirement of the space shuttle. Lockheed Martin Corp. set up a factory for the Orion crew exploration vehicle inside KSC's Operations and Checkout Building, and Boeing plans to concentrate construction and processing of its CST-100 commercial crew capsule and the U.S. Air Force's unmanned X-37B space plane in two former space shuttle hangars. A view of the flame trench at launch pad 39A. Photo credit: NASA/Dan CasperSpaceX will operate and maintain pad 39A at its own expense, according to a NASA press release. NASA was spending about $1 million annually on upkeep for the launch pad.NASA officials see no need for pad 39A in its space exploration plans. Nearby Launch Complex 39B received a facelift over the last four years, which saw the demolition of its shuttle-era servicing towers, refurbishment of plumbing and propellant tanks, and modernization of its electrical and communications network.Pad 39B will be home to NASA's Space Launch System, a government-owned heavy-lift rocket that will launch astronaut crews on deep space expeditions. NASA plans its first destination to be an asteroid repositioned by a robotic spacecraft in a stable orbit near the moon. The first unmanned test launch of the SLS is scheduled before the end of 2017.Shotwell said SpaceX plans to build a new hangar near launch pad 39A to assemble rockets horizontally before transferring the launchers to the pad and lifting them atop a launch platform for liftoff. The Falcon Heavy is SpaceX's biggest booster. It is powered by three kerosene-fueled first stages and an upper stage derived from the Falcon 9 rocket. Each Falcon 9 first stage is powered by nine Merlin 1D engines. The Falcon Heavy, which uses a combined 28 engines, will be the most powerful space launcher in the world when it first flies in 2015.SpaceX says the Falcon Heavy can lift nearly 117,000 pounds, or 53 metric tons, into low Earth orbit and shoot 29,000 pounds of payload on a trajectory to Mars. When fueled for launch, the rocket will weigh more than 1,600 tons. The Falcon Heavy's inaugural flight was scheduled from Vandenberg Air Force Base, but the acquisition of launch pad 39A allows SpaceX to move the mission from California to Florida. Artist's concept of the Falcon Heavy. Photo credit: SpaceX"Until yesterday, we didn't actually have pad 39A," said Emily Shanklin, a SpaceX spokesperson, in an email response to questions. "Once the lease was signed, it became the option that made the most sense. Our first heavy missions are out of the Cape, and 39A will feature vertical integration as well, which is required by the military."The U.S. Air Force requires its most precious payloads to be attached to their rockets in a vertical orientation. SpaceX's current processing paradigm uses horizontal integration, where satellites are bolted to the launch vehicle inside a hangar, then the rocket rolls to the launch pad and is hoisted upright within hours of liftoff.SpaceX is seeking to break into the market to launch pricey Defense Department and intelligence missions. United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, currently launches all of the military's large satellites on Delta 4 and Atlas 5 rockets. The Air Force set aside 14 missions for competition between ULA and SpaceX -- and any other company wishing to bid -- over the next few years, but budget cuts and delays threaten to cut that number to fewer launches open for bidding. The military's insistence that its payloads be integrated with rockets vertically, an overlooked point in recent congressional hearings and debates on the future of the U.S. launch market, has forced SpaceX to rethink its concept of operations.Vertical integration requires the presence of a fixed or mobile tower at the launch pad, giving cranes and workers access to lift and attach satellites to the rocket.Launch pad 39A's fixed service structure, a holdover from the space shuttle era, would fit the requirement.NASA selected SpaceX to enter negotiations to use pad 39A in December after a protest from Blue Origin, a private rocket company owned by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, challenging the fairness of the space agency's search for a tenant to assume control of the launch complex.Blue Origin claimed NASA expressed a preference for the future tenant of pad 39A to support a multi-user concept, in which several different rockets could utilize the facility. File photo of the launch of space shuttle Atlantis from pad 39A on the final shuttle mission. Photo credit: NASA/Tony Gray and Tom FarrarThe Government Accountability Office in December decided NASA had expressed no preference for either a multiple-user or an exclusive agreement for the launch pad. NASA announced its selection of SpaceX the day after the GAO rendered its decision.NASA officials say they will make launch pad 39B available to commercial users when it is not needed by the Space Launch System. The first two SLS flights are scheduled for 2017 and 2021 -- the first crewed launch -- so NASA officials say such a long gap will create an opportunity for other rockets to use launch pad 39B.The SLS will only stay at the launch pad for three-to-five days after rollout from KSC's massive Vehicle Assembly Building before liftoff, ensuring a minimal footprint and few scheduling conflicts for potential commercial users, officials said.Follow Stephen Clark on Twitter: .STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134. A final single frame image from Spirit's panoramic camera was one of the final snapshots the rover sent back to Earth in March 2010.After blasting off from Earth in 2003, Spirit reached the Red Planet seven months later. Greatly surpassing its three-month mission goal, Spirit operated for more than six years before going into hibernation last year.Scientists hoped the rover would survive another Martian winter and continue returning data as a stationary research station. Officials blame its death on the rover being stuck in a stubborn sand trap, and the situation was exacerbated by two broken wheels. In the end, Spirit wasn't able to limp out of its predicament and spent the winter with its dusty solar panels pointed away from the sun as temperatures plummeted lower than the craft had ever experienced before. The images below are some of Spirit's final photographic contributions to the Martian science record. But researchers say the rover's data will continue being analyzed and will yield important insights for years to come.Spirit collected this mosaic in April 2009 as it approached a steep mound named "Von Braun" atop a modest plateau known as "Home Plate" on Sol 1869. Artist's concept of the Spitzer Space Telescope. Credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechNASA's planet-hunting Kepler telescope, along with eight other operating missions, got better news. NASA approved funding for those projects, plus another two years of data analysis on observations by Europe's Planck cosmological probe, for at least two more years. The space agency's senior review, a biennial panel which recommends whether NASA should continue funding operating science missions, said Spitzer continues to produce quality science results but could not justify its relatively costly yearly budget."It is, of course, very disappointing when you are the one mission that is called out for termination, but we very much hope, on the other hand, that the positive science review that we got from the panel can be used by NASA to solve this problem," said George Helou, director of the Spitzer Science Center at the California Institute of Technology. The senior review board, which consisted of 10 scientists, called Spitzer's capabilities "unique and important," ranging from the characterization of planets around other stars to brown dwarfs, or failed stars, and galaxies in the early universe. But the mission's operating costs were higher than most of NASA's other astrophysics missions."The cost is particularly difficult in the context of an observatory with greatly reduced capabilities with respect to its prime mission," the panel wrote in its report to NASA. "The mission also did not present substantial plans to reduce operations costs with such reduced capabilities. Given the budget climate, the [senior review panel] cannot recommend funding of Spitzer at the levels requested."Should Spitzer be unable to produce valuable science results for less money, the board recommended NASA shut down the mission. NASA agreed with the recommendation.Paul Hertz, director of NASA's astrophysics division, said Friday that the Spitzer team can submit an amended proposal to NASA Headquarters with a further cut to the mission's operating budget, giving the space agency one more chance to see if it can afford to pay for curtailed observations with Spitzer.According to Helou, mission officials hope to send the updated proposal to NASA as soon as this week. But Helou cautioned any arbitrary budget cut to Spitzer would harm the science return which received high marks from the senior review."We understand that the situation is very tight, so we'll try and make it as responsive to the fiscal reality as possible," Helou said in an interview Friday. "But because it's an observatory that was designed as a Great Observatory and has capabilities matching that design, we cannot, say, operate at half the cost or a quarter of the cost. We have already reduced from the original cost of operations. We are down to a third of that cost and what we are proposing now was even less, but we'll work to see how much more we can trim."Without a budget boost from Congress or cost savings within the Spitzer project, money for the mission will run out Sept. 30 and NASA will decommission the telescope beginning this fall.Spitzer received $16.5 million to operate in fiscal year 2014, which ends Sept. 30. Helou said the initial proposal considered by NASA's senior review called for a reduced operating budget of $15.35 million in fiscal year 2015.Helou said the funding would have continued Spitzer's research into the atmospheres of exoplanets -- planets around other stars -- including measuring their temperatures, an aptitude not foreseen before Spitzer's launch in 2003.The Kepler mission, which won NASA's support in the senior review, detects planets around other stars. Spitzer's job is to follow up exoplanet discoveries, providing confirmation and finding details about their environment. Artist's concept of an exoplanet. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech"We are making great progress both in exoplanets and in the study of the very early universe, especially in the latter, where we're studying the galaxies formed in the first half billion years of the universe," Helou said.Spitzer's total cost, including its development, construction, launch and operations, comes to more than $1 billion.Spitzer's annual funding line is less than the 2014 operating budgets for the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, NASA's other Great Observatories, which received $98 million and $55.3 million this year, according to Hertz.Other missions proposed to the senior review have annual operating budgets less than Spitzer's.Hubble and Chandra received four-year extensions, and seven other astrophysics funding lines were approved for two more years of operations. NASA is a junior partner on three of the missions with the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, but the senior review recommended continuing U.S. support for those projects.Projects getting extensions are the:Hubble Space TelescopeFermi Gamma-ray Space TelescopeChandra X-ray ObservatoryKepler Space TelescopeNuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTARSwift Gamma-ray Burst ExplorerX-ray Multi-Mirror Mission-Newton, or XMM-Newton, an ESA missionPlanck, an ESA missionSuzaku/Astro E2, a Japanese missionThe Spitzer Space Telescope launched in August 2003 as the last of NASA's Great Observatories, a quartet of missions including the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, which was retired in 2000."Spitzer has given us a decade of excellent service," Hertz said.Spitzer launched with a supply of super-cold liquid helium to cool its most sensitive infrared detectors, which were designed to image some of the coldest reaches of the universe.Since 2009, Spitzer has only been able to use two of its shorter wavelength imaging bands after running out of cryogenic helium. Detectors in the near-infrared bands do not need to be chilled to do their work. This striking star formation region, mapped in infrared light by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, was recently spotted by one of Spitzer's Twitter followers searching through the GLIMPSE360 panorama of our Milky Way galaxy. Credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechHelou said the spacecraft is healthy despite its age. Spitzer was launched into an Earth-trailing orbit around the sun, and it is now located about 100 million miles from Earth, a distance that is gradually increasing. At some point in the next few years, even if the spacecraft is functioning fine, Spitzer would have to be shut down anyway because communications would become a problem when its orbit reaches the opposite side of the sun from Earth, officials said."The sensitivity in the channels that are still working is essentially the same that it was at launch, and in addition to that, because we now understand the spacecraft much better, we are able to make small improvements in the performance that translate directly into improved scientific capabilities -- that is the ability to measure the very faint signals which you need to do exoplanet research," Helou said. The senior review noted the high demand by astronomers for observing time on Spitzer."Researchers are asking for six times more hours of observing than we have to allocate," Helou said. "That's been the case for the last two years. There are 700 papers published every year that leverage Spitzer data."There's always disappointment when it's one's own kid that gets kicked to the curb," Helou said. "I sort of understand that the constraints were such that something had to be canceled, and it had to be something big ... I'm not saying they should have canceled something else. The real disappointment is this structural issue with the budget in astrophysics. At a time when there aren't a lot of new launches, they don't have the budget to continue operating a productive mission."Scientists participating in the senior review seemed to agree."American pre-eminence in the study of the Universe from space is threatened to the point of irreparable damage if additional funds cannot be found to fill the projected funding gaps," the review members wrote in their report."It's not only Spitzer, but you can look at several other mission that are getting insufficient support, or are not able to be supported at all, in the current condition," Helou said.NASA officials have acknowledged for several years the growth in the budget for the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to Hubble set for launch in 2018, would likely force NASA to turn off astronomy missions prematurely.JWST received $658 million in the 2014 budget passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama. The rest of NASA's astrophysics mission, which covers all operating missions, data analysis, and development of smaller Explorer-class satellites, got $668 million. The White House and Congress have agreed JWST should be one of the top priorities for NASA, alongside the International Space Station and the construction of the heavy-lift Space Launch System mega-rocket for human expeditions beyond low Earth orbit.Helou said the termination of Spitzer this year will have a ripple effect on science with JWST once it comes online. Spitzer and JWST both observe the universe in infrared wavelengths largely invisible to telescopes on the ground."In terms of a true production capability, where you have an observatory that is very prolific in data, in particular for a pointing observatory like Spitzer, there is nothing else until we get JWST up there," Helou said. "One of the arguments we make scientifically for continuing Spitzer is to prepare for JWST, but also to make sure we have some capability that allows that part of the spectrum available for study, so when JWST comes around we have the best knowledge possible for that spectral range."NASA plans to release the results of a senior review looking at the agency's planetary missions in late June or early July, according to a NASA spokesperson. The budget situation in NASA's planetary division has raised fears some missions may be turned off.Follow Stephen Clark on Twitter: .STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134. Artist's concept of LADEE at the moon. Credit: NASA Ames/Dana Berry The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer is now flying just a few miles above the moon's highest mountain ranges, collecting data and challenging ground controllers charged with keeping the spacecraft alive as long as possible.Running low on fuel, the mission is expected to end around April 21, when LADEE crashes into the far side of the moon. The violent ending will come less than 33 weeks since the probe launched in September, but it keeps with the mission's script. The mission was designed for a short lifetime, and its primary data-gathering phase lasted just 100 days and ended in March.Since arriving at the moon in early October, LADEE has "overachieved" its objectives, said Joan Salute, LADEE program executive at NASA Headquarters in Washington.LADEE's three science instruments scooped up dust particles, identified the chemical make-up of the moon's atmosphere, and looked for signs of hydrated compounds, such as water and hydroxyl (OH), migrating from the moon's middle latitudes toward polar cold traps in permanent shadow, where scientists say ice can sit undisturbed for billions of years. The unique spacecraft also hosts a laser communications terminal, which successfully accomplished the first laser linkup between the moon and Earth, demonstrating a new optical relay paradigm that could drastically boost data return from future deep space missions."It's always bittersweet," said Butler Hine, LADEE's project manager at NASA's Ames Research Center in California. "The mission was such a resounding success that everybody on the team is incredibly proud of the performance of the spacecraft and the team members."Officials will not know exactly when the end will come. The probe's trajectory is designed to impact somewhere on the far side of the moon around April 21."This represented six years of very hard work by a lot of people, so you're both very proud of the success and you're also a little melancholy that you won't be talking to the spacecraft again," Hine told reporters Thursday. "I think folks will actually miss talking to the spacecraft."Controllers last week fired LADEE's main engine to lower the spacecraft's altitude, putting it on a trajectory to skim as low as 1 or 2 miles over the moon's mountaintops. On Friday, engineers plan the mission's final engine burn to put LADEE on course to impact somewhere on the far side of the moon around April 21."That drops us to this relatively low spot that we can continue flying in for the rest of the mission until the planned impact," Hine said.A major test for LADEE will come April 15, when the Earth will move between the moon and the sun. The occurrence will create a spectacular lunar eclipse visible from Earth, but it will stress LADEE near its technological limits.LADEE was never designed to survive such an eclipse, when its solar panels will be starved of sunlight and the spacecraft must survive on stored battery power alone. LADEE will also get very cold during the four-hour eclipse, ac

STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: December 7, 2006After a nail-biting, down-to-the-wire countdown, launch director Mike Leinbach called off an attempt to launch the shuttle Discovery tonight on a critical space station mission because of low, thickening clouds over the Kennedy Space Center."We gave it our best shot and did not get clear and convincing evidence in the end that the cloud-ceiling rule would clear enough or us," Leinbach radioed the astronauts at 9:36 p.m. "So we're going to have declare a scrub at this time. Appreciate your support and we'll come up with a scrub-turnaround plan for you.""We understand," commander Mark Polansky replied from Discovery's flight deck. "Thank the team for all their hard work, try not to be too disappointed. We will be ready to support the next time we get a chance."Video coverage for subscribers only:VIDEO:SCRUB CALLED DUE TO LOW CLOUDS VIDEO:ASTRONAUTS DEPART QUARTERS FOR PAD VIDEO:CREW FINISHES DONNING SPACESUITS VIDEO:ASTRONAUTS IN DINING ROOM THURSDAY VIDEO:PAD'S ROTATING SERVICE STRUCTURE ROLLED BACK MORE: With a 90 percent "no-go" forecast for Friday, NASA managers decided to recycle Discovery for a second launch attempt Saturday night at 8:47:34 p.m. The forecast Saturday is 70 percent "no-go," improving slightly Sunday and Monday. But the forecast does not turn positive until Tuesday, when meteorologists expect a 60 percent chance of acceptable weather.Launch tonight was targeted for 9:35:48 p.m., but low clouds caused concern throughout the final hours of the countdown, primarily because of their potential impact on a return-to-launch-site abort. Launch managers also were concerned about the weather at emergency runways in Spain and France. As it turned out, the rain in Spain appeared within limits and conditions in Florida were deemed acceptable for an RTLS, should an emergency be declared shortly after launch. But during a hold at the T-minus nine-minute mark, weather officers decided a low deck of clouds over the space center was too thick, violating launch commit criteria.Leinbach decided to take the countdown to the T-minus five-minute mark and hold there, hoping conditions would improve during the final five minutes of the 10-minute launch window. But it was not to be and he reluctantly cut off the countdown. The shuttle's overall launch periord extends through Dec. 26. But NASA managers want to launch Discovery before Dec. 17 if at all possible to avoid having the shuttle in orbit on New Year's day. The shuttle's navigation software was not designed to fly over a year-end rollover and some clocks would consider Jan. 1 to be day 366 instead of the first day of the new year. The astronauts can reset those systems, but it's a complex procedure in an already complicated flight. In addition, flight controllers don't want the shuttle to make the "YERO" transition unless it's docked to the space station at the time. That requirement would prevent a launch between Dec. 18 and 22.Video coverage for subscribers only:VIDEO:POST-ARRIVAL COMMENTS FROM THE CREW VIDEO:ASTRONAUTS ARRIVE IN WAVE OF T-38 JETS VIDEO:BIOGRAPHIES OF THE DISCOVERY ASTRONAUTS VIDEO:NARRATED STS-116 MISSION PREVIEW MOVIE VIDEO:WEDNESDAY'S SHUTTLE BRIEFING IN ITS ENTIRETY BRIEFING SOUNDBITES:VIDEO:THE ISSUES DISCUSSED AT FRR VIDEO:NOT YOUR FATHER'S FRR VIDEO:READY TO RESUME NIGHT LAUNCHES VIDEO:LAUNCH PREPS PROCEEDING WELL VIDEO:YEAR-END ROLLOVER CONCERNS VIDEO:REASSESSING TANK FOAM RISK VIDEO:STATION SOLAR ARRAY DRIVE SYSTEM PROBLEM VIDEO:PRESSURIZATION PRECAUTIONS AT THE PAD VIDEO:OVERVIEW OF STS-116 MISSION VIDEO:SHUTTLE/ISS PROGRAM PERSPECTIVE VIDEO:PREVIEW OF MISSION'S SPACEWALKS VIDEO:ASTRONAUTS' PRE-FLIGHT NEWS BRIEFING VIDEO:COVERAGE OF PRACTICE COUNTDOWN ACTIVITIES VIDEO:DISCOVERY ROLLS TO THE PAD VIDEO:DISCOVERY MATED TO TANK AND BOOSTERS VIDEO:SHUTTLE HOISTED VERTICALLY INSIDE VAB VIDEO:DISCOVERY HAULED FROM HANGAR TO VAB VIDEO:PORT 5 TRUSS PAYLOAD PACKED UP VIDEO:CREW VISITS KENNEDY SPACE CENTER VIDEO:EXTERNAL FUEL TANK MATED TO BOOSTERS MORE: Final Shuttle Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The crew emblem for the final space shuttle mission is now available in our store. Where the surviving spouse has not yet reached full retirement age, he or she can begin to collect benefits at as early as age 60 and even as early as age 50 if disabled. However, the benefit is reduced by a small percentage for each month until the surviving spouse reaches full retirement age. This may result in a significant reduction in the monthly survivor's benefit. Assuming you live a normal life span, by claiming benefits early, you collect a smaller monthly income but you begin receiving it sooner. The concept is that since you collect benefits for a longer period of time, it should equal the total received if you waited until full retirement age. Consult the for a chart showing how age may reduce benefits.

After having the polish applied, ultraviolet (UV) lamps are used to seal the polish to the nail, a process known as "curing." When the polish is ready to come off, the nails are soaked in acetone for at least 10 or 15 minutes because the sealed polish is hard to remove.

The MENA region is one of incredible diversity. With a population of over 400 million in 22 countries the juxtapositions on politics, history, religion, culture and economic fortunes are vast and well known. Older more traditional economies such as that of Egypt now sit alongside the relatively new emerging economies established on the back of crude oil and natural gas production. Whilst the GCC states have amassed considerable fortunes from the black gold (the region holds six out ten countries with the largest proven oil reserves), it is the imagination and ambition to diversify their economies that has caught global attention. This, coupled with relative political stability and economic reform, has led to considerable foreign interest, both in terms of financial and human capital investment.Male pattern baldness in middle age could signal that a man is more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer later in life, a study suggests.

I want to fuck real pussy! Hook me up with escorts, prostitutes, whores, hookers and call girls! From time to time we all need something new in our lives and to be more precise, we need a fresh woman (or transsexual?) to take us to higher grounds than our girlfriends or wives. Maybe we just want to impress our co-workers and business partners with a luxury companion at a Las Vegas party or do you want to have a sex vacation in Thailand? I recommend traveling to Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya for the girlfriend (or ladyboy) experience or for sex tourism! https://i.imgur.com/RMsyErd.jpg
